The answer to Tom Jones' immortal question: What's new, Pussycat, could be you.
The soon-to-launch CW network has ordered eight episodes of the reality competition The Search for the Next Pussycat Doll, pitting wannabes against each other for the chance to be named the seventh member of the "Don't Cha" pop group.
"At its core, this show goes beyond just finding a new Pussycat Doll; it's about female empowerment, self-discovery and personal transformation," said Dawn Ostroff, CW's president of entertainment.
Not to mention fit girls dancing around in tight outfits.
Each hourlong episode will revolve around the current members' nationwide search to add another song-and-dance babe to their expanding troupe, with the casting sessions watched over by Pussycat Dolls puppet master Robin Antin.
The project will be shepherded by Charlie's Angels director McG, America's Next Top Model producer Ken Mok and Interscope Record boss Jimmy Iovine and is set to premiere on the WB-UPN hybrid network during the 2006-07 season. (The CW officially launches Sept. 20.)
"I'm most interested in the personal drama, about the [candidates] leaving their relationships or trust issues with their parents," McG told Variety. "It's all about the real-life stuff that lies within."
Right. And the fit girls dancing around in tight outfits is just filler.
Antin, who as the sister of Blow Out's mane man Jonathan Antin is no stranger to reality TV, will oversee the auditioners, putting the finalists through a series of competitions designed to separate the pretty, untalented contestants from the pretty, talented ones.
In Top Model fashion, the top candidates will prove their Doll mettle by living together while performing the weekly challenges, though it's unknown where the gals will be based (Los Angeles, however, seems the likeliest location).
The Pussycat Dolls--comprised of Ashley Roberts, Melody Thornton, Kimberly Wyatt, Nicole Scherzinger, Carmit Bachar and Jessica Sutta--were created 10 years ago by Antin as a burlesque act that featured a rotating roster of talent.
The troupe gained pop culture prominence several years ago when Hollywood hotties, including Christina Aguilera, Christina Applegate and Carmen Electra, got in on the act.
The Dolls' debut album, PCD, was released in September and has sold roughly 4.7 million copies worldwide.
Last week, "Buttons," became the third single off the album to crack the Billboard Hot 100 charts, landing at number four. |
